Shaffrey Architects were delighted to accept the RIAI Silver Medal for 14 Henrietta Street on February 29th, 2024.
Silver Medals are awarded to buildings that exemplify innovation and architectural ingenuity in conserving and restoring Ireland’s cultural and built heritage. 14 Henrietta Street has won the Silver Medal for the period 2017 to 2019.
The triennial RIAI Silver Medal for Conservation and Restoration is the highest award for buildings that have undergone a process of conservation and restoration and is awarded to an architect or architectural practice for projects of significant merit completed with the specified three-year period. The medal is awarded several years after completion so that the success of the building can be confirmed by the passage of time.
Here is the Jury citation: “This exemplary project shows the value of an evidence-led, research-based approach to conservation, while ensuring that the architectural character of the building was revealed and enhanced. The team has skilfully charted the difficult task of conveying three hundred years of history and change, while still managing to be contemporary in approach. With decision making informed by research, there is a fine balance of conservation, repair and modern intervention, with no space for conjecture.
Difficult problems were solved with care and imagination, and the work serves as a template for a more rigorous and restrained approach for the conservation, refurbishment and re-use of historic buildings.
The contemporary addition to the rear, which provides essential services for the building’s new use, is finely and modestly executed. In its new iteration as a museum the building reveals stories that stretch from the affluence of the early Georgian era to the tenement housing of over one hundred citizens in the first decades of the twentieth century.”

The European Commission and Fundació Mies van der Rohe have announced the first shortlist of 449 works competing for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture –Mies van der Rohe Award 2022.
We are delighted to announce that our project Goethe-Institut Irland, Extension and Refurbishment of 37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2 in collaboration with Henchion Reuter Architects has been shortlisted for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2022.

RHA Gold Medal Awarded to Patrick Shaffrey

We are delighted to announce that our founding partner Patrick Shaffrey has been awarded the RHA Gold Medal.
The RHA has awarded a Gold Medal since 1994 to persons who have made significant contributions to the Academy in particular and to the arts in Ireland in general. A citation is given by either the President or a guest and the medal which features a profile of the Academy’s second President, Francis Johnston is given to the recipient. Previous recipients include: Sir Alfred Beit, Lewis and Loretta Glucksman and Grafton Architects.
“Patrick Shaffrey is renowned for a life-times work in the related fields of architectural conservation; an achievement widely acknowledged by the multiple distinctions awarded. Patrick’s outstanding achievement has been his insistence on the integration of conservation awareness into the everyday vocabulary of architecture – something which had been previously regarded as the esoteric and specialist. European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award 2019 Exhibition

The European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2019 exhibition travels across Europe and will now be presented at the AZW in Vienna, Austria in a special edition that wishes to pay tribute to Dietmar Steiner (1958-2020) founder and director of the AZW for his commitment and dedication to the Award almost from the beginning.
The exhibition features videos, images and models of the winning project, the transformation of 530 dwellings - Grand Parc Bordeaux by Lacaton & Vassal architectes; Frédéric Druot Architecture; Christophe Hutin Architecture and the Emerging Architecture Winner, BAST studio's proposal for the school refectory in Montbrun Bocage as well as the finalists' (Terrassenhaus Berlin/Lobe Block, Plascencia Auditorium and Congress Centre, PC Caritas in Melle and Skanderberg square in Tirana) and of the 40 shortlisted.
It will open in an online event (zoom and facebook) on 29 July at 18:00 with the participation of Angelika Fitz (director of the AZW), Hatto Käfer (policy officer Single Market- European Union) and Anna Ramos (director of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe).

RTÉ Radio 1 DAVIS NOW LECTURES, Making Home

At the heart of the DAVIS NOW LECTURES is the aim of bringing to audiences newly-commissioned lectures from our finest scholars, artists and thinkers. Five lectures are recorded on location around Ireland for broadcast as hour-long edited programmes. Each event consists of a lecture, questions and remarks by an invited audience and then a public question + answer session.
The series consultant editor is architectural historian Dr Ellen Rowley, of University College Dublin. The DAVIS NOW LECTURES series is supported by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and its academic partner is University College Dublin. The RTÉ Radio series producer is Clíodhna Ní Anluain.
In the first lecture broadcast on Sunday January 5th 2020, series consultant editor and host Dr Ellen Rowley provides a context for the locations in which the series was recorded and their associations with the series theme MAKING HOME. Gráinne Shaffrey has recorded a small introductory piece for the series.
European Cultural Heritage Days

The European Cultural Heritage Days will take place from 12th -15th of September in Riga, Latvia. The theme this year is ‘Restoration’, which will address the future challenges of the restoration industry and profession, strengthen professionalism, enhance understanding of authenticity and appreciate and respect the informative and sensory value of the original substance.
Excursions, talks and workshops will consider projects such as the Latvian National Museum of Art, Riga Stock Exchange, Burtnieki Lutheran Church, Dobele Music School, Liepāja State Gymnasium No. 1, Tashi Manor, Nurmuiža, Riga Jesus Church and Ramava Manor.

South Georgian Dublin Townhouse Re-Use Guidance Document

Dublin City Council have published the guidance document prepared by Shaffrey Architects.
The Georgian squares, streets and townhouses of Dublin are internationally renowned, and form part of the unique heritage and identity of our city. In recent years there has been an increasing awareness of the need to increase residential occupancy in the city particularly in underused upper floors of historic buildings. Such an approach not only helps alleviate the housing crisis; but increases the vitality of our streets and urban spaces, and crucially because it is recognised that a lived-in historic building is the best way to ensure its protection in the long term.
The City Development Plan 2016-2022 promotes the use of the Georgian areas for residential uses as part of the mixed-use approach for the city.
This Guidance Document arises from the above considerations as applied to the South Georgian Area. It sets out a range of possible solutions for the adaptation, densification and conversion of some typical Georgian town houses.

Good News from Barcelona!
The Awards Ceremony took place yesterday at the Barcelona Pavilion. Before the Awards Ceremony, the 2019 exhibition was opened, showcasing the 383 nominated works and focusing on the 40 shortlisted buildings with models, videos, drawings and other architectural tools to make these works understandable to all.

From the long list of 383 projects, 14 Henrietta Street is one of the 40 projects shortlisted for the 2019 Mies van der Rohe award.
We are delighted to be shortlisted for this prestigious prize for European architecture and share this acknowledgement with our colleagues and clients who worked closely and generously with us on this very singular project over the years. Henrietta Street has been a totem for architecture and urbanism in Dublin; 14 Henrietta Street shows the interwoven nature of architecture, society and culture. It has been a privilege and a rich learning ground for us to work in this special place.
The 7 members of the Jury have chosen 40 works which highlight the opportunities and the trends of today’s architecture in the European territory: adaptive reuse, housing and culture.
The shortlisted works are spread out in 17 different European countries. 7 of them are in France, 6 in Spain, 4 in Belgium, 3 in Austria and 3 in Denmark. Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Romania have 2 shortlisted works and Albania, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Portugal, Serbia and Slovakia 1 work each. It is the first time that Albania, Serbia and Slovakia have a shortlisted work.
In the selection of 40, Culture is the most represented program with 15 works (museums, cultural centres, music theatres and an auditorium/congress centre). There are 6 Education buildings (schools, university buildings and libraries); 5 Collective housing works; 3 Mixed use constructions; 2 Industrial centres and 2 Single houses; and 1 Health, 1 Infrastructure, 1 Office, 1 Social welfare, 1 Sport & Leisure, and 1 Urban Planning works.
European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award

The European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe have announced the names of the works competing in the 2019 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe.
We are delighted that 14 Henrietta Street, Dublin has been shortlisted for this prestigious prize.
The Prize is awarded biennially to works completed within the previous two years.
The principal objectives are to achieve a thorough understanding of the transformation of Europe’s built environment; to recognize and commend excellence and innovation in the field of architecture; and to draw attention to the important contribution of European professionals in the development of new ideas with the undeniable support of clients and the involvement of those who will become the users of these places.
The jury formed by Dorte Mandrup (Chairwoman), Frank McDonald, María Langarita, Kamiel Klaasse, Ștefan Ghenciulescu, Angelika Fitz and George Arbid will shortlist 40 projects that will be announced on January 16th, 5 finalists will be declared on February 13th. The winners will be announced in mid-April and the EU Mies Award Open Days will take place in May to promote visits to the shortlisted and finalist works.
The process will culminate with the EU Mies Award Day on May 7 at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona: opening of the exhibition, lectures and debates, presentation of the publication and Awards Ceremony.
Democratising Conservation

This seminar aims to examine how conservation can engage with diverse voices and values in heritage debates through new methodologies and perspectives. This seminar therefore brings together guests from across the island of Ireland and further afield to address these issues through a series of presentations and concluding with a panel discussion. Our principal, Gráinne Shaffrey will give a talk on ‘Conservation and the public, experiences from Irish practice’.

Goethe-Institut Irland celebrates reopening of 37 Merrion Square

After a major redevelopment and expansion, the Goethe Institut Irland’s Georgian headquarters reopened on 19th September 2018.
Working in collaboration with Henchion Reuter Architects the redevelopment has seen the 1787 Georgian townhouse refurbished to its period glory and welcomes the creation of a new garden and contemporary mews building on the site. Building work commenced in 2016. The refurbished historic building contains the Goethe-Institut’s information and library service, a new café and expanded cultural / events space, while the contemporary mews building houses the German Language School and services for teachers of German.

The official opening of 14 Henrietta Street took place on Friday, September 14th. Dublin City Council were delighted to welcome Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Nial Ring, and Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan T.D. to 14 Henrietta Street last week for the official opening of this amazing civic building.
The stories of 300 years of city life are contained within the walls of this one address. Built as a grand townhouse in the 1740s, 14 Henrietta Street was turned into tenements in the 1880s, with some 100 people living here by 1911. It remained a tenement house until the last families left around 1979.
You can visit the house and find out about it - and the city - on one of the guided tours. Through video and storytelling, the guides will bring you through the building's shifting fortunes - from family home to courthouse, from barracks to tenement hall - and tell you about the lives of the people who lived here and how social change impacted on them, and Dublin, over time.

Milestone Achieved for Parnell Square Cultural Quarter as Planning Application Finalised

Detailed plans for Parnell Square Cultural Quarter, which will be anchored by a new City Library, were presented in City Hall, yesterday Monday 10th September. The Design Team, led by Grafton Architects and Shaffrey Architects, is currently finalising the planning application which will be lodged with An Bord Pleanála for consideration in the coming weeks.

Former tenement house will open for advance tours in July
The conservation of a former tenement house at 14 Henrietta Street in Dublin’s north inner city has been named Best Conservation/Restoration Project, and has won the Special RIAI Jury Award at the prestigious annual RIAI Irish Architecture Awards.
A home to Dublin’s social history, 14 Henrietta Street will officially open to the public in September. It tells the story of tenement life in Dublin, and its origins, through the life-cycle of what was once a home to the elite of the city. Visiting the house opens a door to nearly 300 years of the city’s life, from a grand townhouse of the 1750s to a tenement building from the 1880s to the 1970s, which, in 1911, was home to 100 people from 17 families.
The painstaking conservation work at the Dublin City Council-owned building was carried out over a 10-year period, spearheaded by Shaffrey Architects, who were named winners of the RIAI Irish Architecture Awards, with their client Dublin City Council. In awarding Best Conservation/Restoration Project, the RIAI 2018 Jury said: “Peeling back the layers of history, the restoration and refurbishment of 14 Henrietta Street is an architectural story book. Revealing the lives of those who have lived there through the years has resulted in an inspirational and engaging museum building. Carefully inserting contemporary necessities without resorting to the pastiche is both respectful and exciting. Skill, craft, innovative conservation, historical examination and complex decision making are all evident in upgrading for public use and exposing the tiers of change over the centuries. This is an exemplary project that is enabling the past to live anew and bringing the future to its doorstep.”
Bookings are now being taken for advance tours on Fridays and Saturdays in July and August, and then more regularly from 15th September onwards.
Awarding the Special Jury Award, the Jury said: “This is a gift to the city of Dublin, made possible by an inspiring client and a highly skilled team of architects and contractor. Architecture and exhibition design merge here in a very unique way, explaining the history of the building by restoring different parts of the building to different periods of its occupancy. Most impressive is the way the architect manages to bring the building up to contemporary technical and regulatory standards in an almost invisible way, making the experience of the building completely immersive. Outstanding.”
Commenting on the double win, assistant chief executive of Dublin City Council, Richard Shakespeare said: “When Dublin City Council undertook to save and renovate 14 Henrietta Street more than a decade ago it was in a derelict state. I congratulate our heritage, architecture and conservation teams and Shaffrey Architects for their sympathetic treatment of this building, ensuring that both it and this important streetscape have been retained, and that the story of 14 Henrietta Street is told in such an engaging manner.”
Heritage officer with Dublin City Council, Charles Duggan has overseen work to the house since 2007. He said: “The acknowledgement of this unique project by the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland is a testament to the foresight and courage of Dublin City Council for commencing work on the house in 2008 and persevering through the depths of the recession. The award honours the professionalism and tireless dedication of Shaffrey Architects, with whom the City Council worked closely for ten years to bring this house back to life. The award gives recognition to the hard work and skill of Gem Construction and their team of craftsmen. Furthermore, the award underscores the importance of the research-led approach to design and conservation that we adopted from the outset and most importantly it celebrates the valued support of the house's community of former residents, who shared with us their memories and insights, enriching our understanding of this deeply special place."
Architect Gráinne Shaffrey of Shaffrey Architects said: “This unique project is primarily about telling the story of a remarkable building in a remarkable street which has much wider resonance and meaning. We have been involved in the architectural recovery of 14 Henrietta Street since 2005 and so to have been awarded in such a manner by our peers brings us great joy. The awards also acknowledge the significant collaborative endeavour this has been, with Dublin City Council a supportive and ambitious client, with our design team colleagues, the contractors and craftspeople through all stages, the researchers, curators, poets and oral history team and, above all, the generosity of former residents and community who wholeheartedly engaged with this project.”
While 14 Henrietta Street will officially open in September 2018, advance tours are available on Fridays and Saturdays in July and August, with an opportunity for the visitors to feed back their memories, stories and reflections. Henrietta Street Tenement Museum is an initiative by Dublin City Council and Heritage Department to celebrate the rich history of inner city Dublin from the early Georgian Period to 20th Century Ireland.
Dr Ellen Rowley is an architectural historian, looking primarily at 20th Century Ireland. Educated at Trinity College Dublin and Cambridge University, she has written extensively on Irish architectural modernism, she is currently developing the new Tenement Museum Dublin. Gráinne Shaffrey is a principal of Shaffrey Architects. Their main field of work covers specialised aspects of architecture including existing buildings, their adaptation to new use and repair, urban design and new buildings in existing urban areas. Gráinne is an RIAI Grade 1 Conservation Architect and currently President of ICOMOS Ireland.

ICOMOS announces The 19th Annual Maura Shaffrey Memorial Lecture

Dr. Peter Harbison will discuss ‘The Heritage of Tourism, ‘Keeping Sight of Sites’ at George's Hall, Dublin Castle, Dublin 2 on Friday 3rd of November 2017 6.30pm for 7.00 pm talk. This event is invite only.
In this lecture Dr. Harbison addresses issues such as the commercialisation of cultural heritage sites in tourism, visitor information and engagement, conservation management and the role of organisations and local communities.

International Women in Architecture Day Talk

To mark International Womens in Architecture Day, the RIAI have organised two lectures by renowned architect Grainne Shaffrey and architectural historian and RIAI Honorary Member Dr Ellen Rowley on the forthcoming Tenement Museum Dublin / An Músaem Tionántán.
The Tenement Museum Dublin is housed in a former tenement at No 14 Henrietta Street, Dublin 1 and will bring to life the story of the building and of its residents. Grainne Shaffrey and Ellen Rowley have been centrally involved in this landmark project – Grainne as architect and Ellen as curator. The museum will open to the public on 24th August with a 6-week performance by ANU Productions.

The presentation will set the context for the works, with a brief history of the project and describing the design approach and principles which guided us in our decision making and detailed design. We will look in some detail at how architect and engineer worked together in developing and agreeing solutions. We will also focus on some of the bespoke solutions developed in response to building standards and codes. Some of these may be more transferable than others. We will probably also touch on some of the frustrations and ‘roadblocks’ we couldn’t get through. An overriding message in our presentation will be the importance of collaboration and team work.
